Computers need to be regulated in schools

From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"

Go to the project

Schools having students using computers instead of paper instruction is actively harming our children’s ability to write and communicate effectively. In not saying that computers don’t have a place in schools, but they shouldn’t be the main form of instruction. My experience is from my niece who is a high school student who has all of her work on the computer and struggles with writing and spelling in a way we didn’t at her age without them.

Big Tech Moguls do not allow their children to use a computer. There is no need for a child to use a computer to learn. Studies show the severe effects on students who use computers in school.
Unfortunately, our children are learning at a very early age that they do not have to “know” anything, as long as they have a phone or computer handy to look it up. The average 12 year old has about half the information in his/her head than they did before computers. Test scores in schools reflect this. As a former teacher, I can tell you that these kids are highly adverse to committing anything to memory or doing anything that can be done by a calculator or computer. Now that we have AI, that is only going to get worse. The only answer is to remove technology from the schools completely. Schools would then be a counterweight to the intellectual atrophy of technology. Children would understand from preschool on up that school is where you go to become the people who create the world, and technology would return to its rightful place a just another tool they use to enhance life, not a way of life itself.
I agree there is a place for technology in education, however, relying on it for all curricula could be detrimental. We need to look at test scores or alternative measures to determine competency. We should also look at Sweden. Sweden pushed technology and now they are back pedaling to bring back text books for to diminished test scores and student incompetence in basic grade level subject functioning.

I think there’s room for a balance of preparing students for a world and workforce dominated by tech AND making sure we aren’t harming critical thinking and other skills that diminish when tech is too heavily relied upon.
