Erosion of Local Decision Making and Authority
From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"
Go to the project
There are constant bills at the statehouse written to take away more and more local anything-- from land use to schools to dumps, it's like they want NH to be one big indiscernible town
The rhetoric of quite a few prominent republican reps and senators echo the idea
Add to that their push with the governor to have data centers and small nuclear, I think municipalities will be powerless to fight them by the time the all pass
and that makes me extra concerned for Coös county -- the Androscoggin is always mentioned if they mention possible locations

Can you give some examples of bills that have recently been proposed that take away local controls? The Republicans and FSP generally try to advocate for more local control, not less...

@Haley Levesque Zoning reforms, educational requirements by the state without funding.

@Rebecca M. my understanding of the policies about zoning is that they provide more local control, not less. Adjusting educational requirements in and of itself doesn't necessarily increase costs. Frankly, similar to the federal government's attempts to dismantle the Dept of Education, the state of NH will likely move towards dismantling as many requirements for education as possible. The only case where this is not true is the new legislation about teaching LGBTQIA+ subjects, which, since we know that "Libertarians" are in favor of personal liberties, should also not limit. They are, but we need to push back on that and say that it should be a local issue. Which it should be, I think.

I think that there are some issues that affect the wider statewide community where state-level regulation and oversight may be necessary. However, I think we should be able to figure out how to have reasonable, rational local level participation in such processes to ensure that local concerns are squarely addressed or otherwise mitigated.

@Mosquito Beaver I agree, however, there is a large number of free staters in Concord who believe themselves to be the moral police, which, in fact they are not. They want to strip regulations, strip funding, and turn us into a libertarian hellscape. It’s all fun and games talking about how we don’t like funding the government until our infrastructure starts to crumble and that is exactly what these free skaters are attempting to do
