Fix tax system

From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"

Go to the project

We need to fix how we provide for and support our educational system. Fairness is critical. Property taxes should not be the foundation and sole means of financing it.

Sales tax is the only fair tax. People who buy more, will pay more. Unlike income or property taxes, I have some control over the sales tax I pay, if I can reduce my spendings. Unlike income or property taxes, we can have non-residents contribute revenue to our state with a sales tax. Make it low enough that we are still attracting shoppers from other states, but let's make those shoppers help finance our public services!
"Income tax" is a taboo term here but please consider this. Property taxes are a wealth tax. You tax obligation is not based on how much money you earned (a/k/a money you can use to buy groceries, etc) but on how much wealth, in the form of real estate, you have. That "wealth" might increase dramatically because of circumstances entirely beyond your control and, more importantly, your income may barely change in the same time frame. But even though you have the same or slightly more income, your tax burden increases.
