Help reduce the average age of our House of Representatives members

From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"

Go to the project

We need to find ways for younger people to run for positions in the House of Representatives. Currently the average age of the members is 61 years old. The nominal stipend is ceremonial at best. We need to create a wage that is attractive to younger people. A salary like $5-10 thousand dollars per year. This might be prohibitive based on the 400 plus members, but it could change the average age down to 50. We need new voices and viewpoints.

A few things to consider: 1. Millennials and Gen X make up 54% of the population of this state yet only make up 6% of the General Court. 2. When $100 was selected for the representative pay back in the 1800s it was chosen to replace the median wage for 25% of the year. If we just accounted for inflation, it should be around $4000, but if we accounted for the spirit of the amount, we should be paying our legislators around $12-24000, given that the session time has also expanded. The average age is ridiculous, representatives are falling asleep in their chairs during public testimony, many are out of touch with modern society, and we aren’t considering the future of the state at all. We do need younger representatives, and while Anon is right that elections should theoretically allow for us to choose younger voices, that doesn’t mean much when the system is designed to artificially limit who is actually capable of serving.

We already have “controls over the age, gender etc of elected representatives. It’s called the ballot box. Money is NEVER the answer for whether someone decides to run for office.
100% agree with you. We need to drastically reduce the number of representatives and conquered and pay them. Right now, the only people who can be representatives in the state of New Hampshire are either retired or rich enough that they do not need to worry about an income. That means that most people in New Hampshire are not being properly represented. I’m sure we’ve all spoken with enough older adults to recognize that they cannot grasp the issues that are most pressing today, and they also won’t be around in the long-term to see the consequences of their actions. We need representatives that understand our needs, are invested in the future, and are actually willing to listen to constituents.
