Money in politics

From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"

Go to the project

We need campaign finance reform. When candidates are spending $50,000 or more, much of it dark money from out of state, to run for a NH House seat that pays $100 per year, this is not an environment that favors local candidates devoted to public service. Our elections are currently for sale, and we are letting big money take over our legislature.

Agreed. I would like to see two changes to the way campaigns work: 1. LIMIT THE DURATION AND TOTAL SPEND FOR CAMPAIGNING. This would disincentivize moneyed interests and encourage candidates to focus on local volunteer efforts instead of buying a media campaign. 2. REQUIRE CAMPAIGNS TO FOCUS ON POLICY PROPOSALS. The "two party system" has resulted in most campaigns focusing on disparaging and insulting the opposition which allows candidates to go through the whole campaign without revealing what policies and changes they would bring it elected. (I know this is harder due to our strong protections for free speech but I would love to hear politicians offer plans & solutions instead of insults & falsehoods.) 😊
