Nuclear power buildup
From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"
Go to the project
Right now the New England grid is a net importer, we have high reliance on fossil fuels especially during peak winter events. This contributes to our high energy costs thanks to the uncertainty of the market.
Renewables are unreliable and require massive amounts of land, and given we are 85% forested would be ecologically devastating.
NEISO is forecasting increased demand in the 2030s and Seabrook NPP, 1200mw and the anchor of our grid, is retiring in 2050
We need to start planning for all of this now and start investing heavily in nuclear

Nuclear is much more expensive than solar and don't require massive amounts of land as stated. Solar can be installed on rooftops and over parking areas. The grid needs to be rethought. We can start by putting solar on schools and helping farmers to go off-grid, helping them, and decreasing infrastructure need for non-farm user.

@Minnow Macaw unfortunately the claim that solar and wind are cheaper is misunderstanding a financial model, and that number only increases if you use rooftop solar as opposed to grid scale solar farms. When accounting for the whole system over the course of equipment lifetimes, and account for geographical constraints, here in the northeast nuclear is cheaper and significantly greener than solar, and slightly greener than wind while requiring less ecological destruction.

I agree with you and even China takes 6 years to build a power plant. Here, it'll be more like 10-12. We need to get started.

@Mark Huck Japan and South Korea have it down to ~5 years
It’s purely politics that keeps us from achieving these numbers
