Public Education
From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"
Go to the project
New Hampshire needs to fund public education for the betterment of society. Unfortunately, ever since charter schools became allowable in the state money, has been diverted from public education to charter schools. A recent bill in New Hampshire would divert funds from public education, even further by allowing people to take money from towns and apply it to whatever educational system they deemed worthy. The only result of this bill would be to decimate education and make it difficult for underprivileged and lesser informed citizens to get educated.

Charter schools are still public schools, the only difference is that they have higher standards and in some cases they are specialized in certain areas. That said, money is not diverted. The issue in most of the school districts are run away budgets for administration, in some districts, DEI consultants being brought in, excessive amounts of money being spent on sports and transportation, all money that is not directly going to three R's education. Many districts are paying teachers far above state and national averages and are delivering sub standard proficiency levels in the three R"s. Increasing funding to schools has always been the go to excuse for improved education. Big lie, the schools, by in large, have had unrealistic increases in funding and the state is still underperforming overall.

@Cheetah Hippopotamus Charter schools do NOT have to abide by established standards or disclosures. They can practice discrimination and rarely serve students with developmental disabilities. They also siphon money from public school making them unable cover their legally binding responsibilities and overhead.

Public education in NH is slowly being decimated by divisive state policies. Budget cuts and the dramatic rise of publicly funded private schools are slowly, but surely decimating our schools. NH education funded by local property taxes is pushing the burden onto local residents, with wealthier towns barely able to absorb it (though at unsustainable levels for older residents and others less well off).
Couple this increased state funding of private school tuition without any meaningful guardrails or accountability of curricula or metrics and here we are! No transparency for voters who might not agree with having tax dollars used this way but who are living with the consequences. And facing ever increasing demand for their hard earned monies for a program rife with opportunity for corruption, kick backs and failure.

As conservatives have focused more on indoctrination as opposed to critical thinking, their attacks on public schools (teaching critical thinking) have contributed significantly to the great divide occurring in this nation. Further defunding public schools does as well. They are turning a portion of our once wonderful state into close minded goose stepping zealots to the detriment of our towns, states, country and the world.

The reason parents are for allowing thier kids to picks schools abd take their taxed money with them is because our school system is failing the state. Instead of working across town and state lines to find was to improve. The state doubles down on money. It's not money. It's the bad system.

If your school system has become a failure it’s because of lack of funding. Good teachers deserve good pay. Educating all our children takes many different types of programs and teachers. Private schools don’t take special ed kids. Most of the parents who jumped at the vouchers were already paying for their kids to go private. So all of us are paying for the rich kids education while ours are struggling in abandoned schools. Not sure what you perceive as “woke”. Maybe you have a problem with history?

@Lizard Minnow its not funding. It's a bad system. I learned more in the 11th grade when we moved to Merrimack, than the previous years. They had a great system. Should teachers get a tad more. Maybe. It won't improve the school.

This is the way to go. Allow parents to decide where to educate their children because the public school system has turned into a failure…too woke, too much money to the teachers union

@Macaw Water buffalo it's not woke. It is a failure. And the main people that will benefit are the ones already in private schools. And they will not take everyone.
