Removing Grade Inflation from Public Education

From "Welcome to The New Hampshire Forum!"

Go to the project

We need to foster a cultural change in public education in this entire country, NH being no different. All across the nation students are graduating from high school with extremely poor proficiency in English and mathematics. Colleges, for example, have complained about the number of students that place into remedial English and math courses for decades. The problem is not the curriculum per se. The problem is lack of standards that are not enforced. When students fail, they should be held back. And only those exceeding expectations, should receive an A.

Making rules that are black and white or one dimensional do not address the basic problem. Humans are very complex. The focus of educational resources needs to be focused on supporting children and families when children are young, such as quality and affordable childcare and better funding of early education. English and math skills depend on building these skills early, not waiting until students fail in high school. I'm not at all sure that holding them back in high school will produce more literate students. The cost of effective remediation by that age is many times more expensive than giving better funding early on. My fear is that the drop out rate would sore, creating even more alienated young people. Now to start thinking of how to approach problem solving that is based on solid research. We need to stop trying to solve our problems with sledge hammers.
